The Watergate scandal is the most serious and well-known political scandal of the 1970s in the USA.

On the 17th of June, 1972 several robbers were arrested in the building of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C. The burglars were connected the presidential administration. The Richard Nixon's administration tried to hide all the evidence of its involvement, but the conspiracy was investigated by the U.S. Congress, which led to a serious constitutional crisis.

This case resulted in numerous abuses and articles of impeachment. In August 1974 Richard Nixon resigned the office. He still remains the only president to do it.
