I had never heard the term "pinkie finger" until about 10 years ago. It was always referred to as the little finger when I was growing up.

Mrs. Deadman, Yes the thumb is shorter but it has a bigger diameter than the fifth digit (digitus minimus). The thumb also has more mass than the fifth digit.

Being from the UK, you should know better. The word actually comes from Scotland. Pinkie is one of the many Scottish terms and expressions that Scotland has exported to North America along with its people. The word has been recorded in dictionaries of American English since the nineteenth century, and appears in diverse modern contexts.
