The Arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea) is a bird species belonging to the subfamily Sterninae (terns). It is considered the migratory bird with the longest migration route, as it breeds in the Arctic and winters in the Antarctic.

The Arctic tern reaches a body length of 33 to 36 cm. Its wing length is 23.9 to 29 cm, and its wingspan is 76 to 85 cm. Its weight varies between 86 and 127 grams.

As a plunge diver, the Arctic tern generally prefers clear, sparsely vegetated coastal areas. Similar to the common tern, with which it shares some habitat use, the Arctic tern frequents large estuaries and the extensive tidal flats between the mainland and the islands. The rich structure of the Wadden Sea, with its branching system of tidal creeks and channels, ditches, groynes, and tide pools, appears to be important for both species. However, unlike the common tern, the Arctic tern's foraging range is considerably smaller.
