Who was the first Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire?
Traditionally history associates Charlemagne (Charles I) as the first Holy Roman Emperor. Pope Leo III crowned him emperor on Christmas day 800 AD. His reign and decisions about successors changes western history in many dynamic ways, creating the basis for the growing and development of one of the greatest and most powerful empires of all time.
The Holy Roman Empire as a Germanic state began under the rule of Otto I and many see this as the beginning of the Holy Roman Empire, Charlemagne and his successors maintain the title of Emperor until 924 AD, and then King Otto I would be crowned Emperor in 962 AD.

You are wrong: Although Charlemagne was crowned Roman Emperor in the West in 800, the first use of the term “Holy Roman Emperor” was applied when Pope John XII crowned Otto, Duke of Saxony, Emperor Otto I on February 3, 962. And your question was about the first emperor of the HOLY Roman Empire.

Well, well. Someone doesn't have a grasp of the English language, at all. Yes, Charlemagne was the first Roman Emperor, but not crowned by any church to become "Holy". That honor went to Otto I in 962 when Pope John XII crowned him, as such. So, your wrong and most answers would be wrong, but if you "Googled" it and only read the highlighted or bold text, you would get Charlemagne's name highlighted, as the first Roman Emperor. However, if you took the time to read the whole paragraph, it clearly states that Otto I was the first to have earned that title of Holiness. Overall, your either getting sloppy in your research or just simply lazy. From the looks of other comments, many agree.

I agree with previous comments, as after I had chosen Otto, (I had seen something about himon tv recently so knew it was him) and it said it was wrong. I checked on line and it is actually Otto. Sorry but this is the first time I have disagreed with an answer.
