Shirley MacLaine was born on April 24, 1934 (Shirley MacLean Beaty) in Richmond, Virginia. Her mother, Kathlyn Corinne (MacLean), was a drama teacher from Nova Scotia, Canada. Her father, Ira Owens Beaty, was from Virginia. He was a professor of psychology and real estate agent. Warren Beatty, her younger brother, was born on March 30, 1937 in Richmond, Virginia. Their family ancestry is known to be mostly English and Scottish. Both Shirley and Warren spent their young lives in Virginia.

As adults, they became well known for making movies. In an exclusive interview with 'Closer Weekly' on Thursday, November 10, 2016, in Beverly Hills, CA, Shirley MacLaine revealed the surprising reason why she has never — and likely never will — work with her brother, Warren Beatty. As an 82 year old actress, Shirley told 'Closer Weekly' at the Talent Managers Association (TMA) Heller Awards: "Oh, I don’t think we’d be a good team." Warren however, a few days later on CBS Sunday Morning said, "[That’s] not a bad idea. There is something about the idea [of working with my sister] that I like and find challenging."

Fans of either one or both can truly hope that they will find a way to finally work together.
