Kate Elizabeth Winslet (born 5 October 1975) is a British actress. She is known for her work in independent films, particularly period dramas, and usually portrays headstrong, complicated women. Often regarded by film critics as one of the "preeminent actresses of her generation," her accolades include an Academy Award, three British Academy Film Awards, four Golden Globe Awards and a Primetime Emmy Award.

Winslet provided the voice of Belle in the animated film "Christmas Carol: The Movie" (2001), based on Charles Dickens' novel. For the film's soundtrack she recorded "What If", which proved to be a commercial hit. The song entered the UK Singles Chart at number six, its peak. Elsewhere, "What If" was released to even bigger success. It became a number-one hit in Austria, Flanders, and Ireland whilst also reaching the top ten in Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

Her leading role as Rose DeWitt Bukater in the epic romance "Titanic" (1997), which earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, which at age 22 made her the fourth-youngest Best Actress nominee at the time. Winslet won a number of awards for her role as Hanna Schmitz, a former Nazi camp guard, in "The Reader" (2008), including the Academy Award for Best Actress.
