Which famous actor had a mob killer-for-hire for a father?
Charles Harrelson was born on July 23, 1938, in Lovelady, Texas. Married four times, he was an insurance salesman in California and a professional gambler. In 1960 he was convicted for armed robbery and served prison time.
Woody Harrelson was born July 23, 1961 and according to Woody his father disappeared from the family's home in Houston in 1968, leaving his mother, Diane, to raise Woody and his two brothers.
Harrelson was tried for the 1968 murder-for-hire killing of Sam Degelia, Jr., a Texas grain dealer and father of four. The case ended in a mistrial but Harrelson was tried again in 1973 and found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in prison. He was released in 1978.
On May 29, 1979, U.S. District Judge John H. Wood Jr. was shot dead in the parking lot outside his San Antonio, Texas, townhouse. Drug kingpin Jimmy Chagra, allegedly paid Harrelson’s around $250,000 to assassinate him. Harrelson was tried sentenced to two life terms in prison.
Conspiracy theorists have long believed Harrelson was involved in the assassination of President Kennedy. In their book "The Man on the Grassy Knoll", John R. Craig and Philip A. Rogers claimed that Harrelson and Charles Rogers were the two gunman behind the picket fence on the Grassy Knoll. In prison, Harrelson confessed to the murder.

Woody continually visited his father, in prison, until he died of a heart attack on March 15, 2007.
