"Hondo", a 1953 American Western film, was directed by John Farrow and stars John Wayne and Geraldine Page. The screenplay is based on the 1952 Collier's short story "The Gift of Cochise" by Louis L'Amour. The book "Hondo" was a novelization of the film also written by L'Amour, and published by Gold Medal Books in 1953. The supporting cast features Ward Bond, James Arness, and Leo Gordon.

In one of the movie's scenes, it's been called an awesome, funny, and necessary scene in light of the circumstances concerning the film's storyline. Tossing a six year old boy into a river had to be the most or almost the funniest thing John Wayne ever did. In a very pointed scene that is again both humorous and serious, John Wayne (Hondo Lane) throws Lee Aaker (Jimmy Lowe) into a pond/river. After this six year old boy told Hondo that he didn't know how to swim, it was then totally apparent that the time had come for him learn. He got tossed into a pond/river and made it to the other side.

The film shooting went over schedule, and Farrow had to leave the production as he was contractually obligated to direct another movie. The final scenes of "Hondo" featuring the Apache attack on the circled wagons of the Army and settlers were shot by John Ford, whom Wayne had asked to finish the film (Ford was uncredited for this work).
