What are male turkeys called?
Male turkeys, also known as toms or gobblers, are fascinating creatures that have been a part of the North American landscape for centuries. Toms are larger than female turkeys, with an average weight of 18 to 25 pounds (8-11 kg) and a height of almost 3 feet (0.9 m). They have dark iridescent plumage, large fanning tails, prominent snoods, and wattles. These features are used by toms to attract females during mating season. Toms also make gobbling and other mating calls to attract females.
Toms are territorial birds and will defend their territory against other males. They use their wings to intimidate other males and will fight if necessary. Toms are also known for their aggressive behaviour towards humans, especially during mating season.
Toms are omnivorous and eat a variety of foods, including roots, tubers, acorns, nuts, berries, flowers, amphibians, insects, and even reptiles. They have excellent eyesight but poor senses of smell and taste. Toms can fly well, from 40 to 55 miles per hour (64-89 kmph), and can also swim and run as fast as 25 miles per hour (40 kmph).
