What onstage incident overshadowed the 94th Oscar Academy Awards 2022 ceremony?

The Oscars ceremony was aired live on Sunday, March 27, 2022. An onstage altercation between actor Will Smith and host Chris Rock overshadowed the 2022 Oscar Academy Awards honours. Host Rock had made a joke about the closely cropped hair of Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who has alopecia, a condition that leads to hair loss. Smith responded by walking onto the stage of the stage and slapping Rock. Viewers were left stunned wondering at first if the blow might have been scripted until Smith returned to his seat warning Rock to stop talking about his wife, using expletives.

An emotional Will Smith won the best actor Oscar for his performance in "King Richard", (wherein he is the father of the tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams). With tears running down his face, he also apologised to the Academy and his fellow nominees, but not to Rock. "I hope the academy invites me back," Smith said.

In a statement, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences said "The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at the show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further actions and consequences in accordance with our bylaws, standard of conduct and California law".

I haven't watched any awards show in years. However, it was easy to answer given the fact that it was this year's Oscars and the amount of press coverage it received. Lady Gaga and Jamie Lee Curtis should've gotten more press coverage for the things they did at The Oscars this year.

For alan -- I don't think it was right for Chris Rock to make jokes about Jada Pinkett Smith medical condition & I don't think that Will Smith should have slapped Chris Rock bc of it. I think that Will Smith could have handled the situation much better then he did. I did like that he was defending & supporting his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith which is good but I think he went about it the wrong way. Violence isn't the answer in any situation.

Will Smith first laughed at the joke until he looked at his wife who wasn’t smiling but looking daggers at her husband…THEN he decided to do the slap. Better lose your career than go home to that look!!! (Come on,guys, can you blame him?)

I didn't see this while watching the Oscars and I never ran across the video of it for several days. When I did see this, I thought it was the worst performance from an actor at the Oscars that I've ever seen. I'll probably will never watch another of his movies again.

I may not agree with what Will Smith did, I can understand why he did it. Both him and Chris Rock were at fault here.

Smith is just defending her wife, as said she is suffering from a rare hair disease. It is no fun poking on somebody else condition. Chris should had made the joke to smith and not her wife or made the joke outside with both of them instead of a live audience. For a family man like smith, family comes first. Not all jokes are funny. It requires timing and the right place or the right people.

Irene Townsend, That’s hardly knew and the joke was hardly that big of a deal. That’s what they asked him to present for. To laugh at a joke, walk all the way over there and strike a person that much smaller than you, in front of his kids, was weird. He didn’t look gallant. All he managed to do was get himself banned for 10 years and make people wonder whom else he’s done that too

Randy, Smith was wrong. Rock was doing what comics at the Oscars have done for years. Smith laughed at the joke- which is probably what made him feel he had some fences to mend in the first place.

IMO, i think it was a publicity stunt from the Oscars to increase viewers which backfired and now an actor who took 25+ years to grow his reputation took 30 seconds to destroy it. Still don't watch it only watch the bits from the Master of Ceremonies as they are pretty funny and Ricky Gervais's roll on the degrdation of Hollywood and its entourage.

Why hasn't Chris whatshisname been called out for what he said. The Oscars have now given free license to Comedians to be able to say anything they want, about anyone they want even if a person has a sickness, doesn't matter how personal it is. I admire Will Smith for Defending his wife.

catmom, I’m in total agreement but I would have wanted my husband to defend me too. Chris should feel lucky it wasn’t a punch!!! Ps. Not a Jada fan for the record!
