The US state of Connecticut is the southernmost state in the New England region of the Northeastern United States. As of the 2020 US census, Connecticut has been home to over 3.6 million residents, its highest decennial count ever, growing every decade since 1790. It is the third-smallest state by area, the 29th most populous, and the fourth most densely populated of the fifty states.

It is bordered by Rhode Island to its east, Massachusetts to its north, New York to its west, and Long Island Sound to its south. Its capital is Hartford. Historically, the state is part of the tri-state area with New York and New Jersey. It is named for the Connecticut River which approximately bisects the state.

It is best known for great universities, beautiful autumn foliage, and rich contributions to America's culture. One of the original 13 colonies, Connecticut holds a sacred place in American history as the birthplace of many American inventions, conventions, and works of art.

The song "Yankee Doodle", a traditional song and nursery rhyme, and one where the early versions of which predate the Seven Years' War and American Revolution, is often sung patriotically in the whole US. "Yankee Doodle" is the state song/anthem of the state of Connecticut.

The song was a pre-Revolutionary War song; it was sung by British military staff to mock the disheveled, disorganized colonial "Yankees". It was written at Fort Crailo around 1755 by British Army surgeon Richard Shuckburgh.
