This is one of the best-known openings of English literature. In full, it runs "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” Thus Jane Austen, in "Pride and Prejudice", launches a tale of marriage-making, money and manners, mainly focused on the five daughters of the Bennet family.
