As of 2017, the World Atlas reports that the United States of America has a dog population of 75.8 million, position it as the country with the highest recorded canines that includes both pets and strays. Due to the popularity of pet dogs, dog parks have been established in nearly every major city and town plus dog grooming parlors have cropped up in multiple locations.

Different states in the country have their own laws related to the management of dogs, with owners responsible for strictly adherence to these laws.

In second place is Brazil with a population of 35.7 million of pet and stray dogs. About 50% of Brazilian households own a dog.

China holds the rank of the third place with 27.4 million of the canine animals that includes both stay dogs and pet dogs.

In fourth place is Russia with 15.0 million dogs that includes strays and pets. Researchers believe that the strays in Russia are descendants of ancient Russian packs, whose population was kept under control during the Soviet period. Furs from these dogs were used to male caps, and many strays were subjected to scientific experiments.
