Before he was struck down with a mortal injury caused by a musket ball that slammed into his left shoulder, Admiral Nelson had been wounded five times. His injuries were :

1) April 1794 - a sharp cut in the back at the siege of Bastia.

2) July 1794 - a badly cut right eye at the siege of Calvi caused by a roundshot landing nearby and driving sand and stones into his face He lost the sight of the eye although it healed well.

3) February 1797 - at the Battle of St. Vincent he was struck a violent blow in the abdomen by a flying splinter from a rigging block. He suffered very severe bruising and abdominal trauma that caused problems for the rest of his life.

4) July 1797 - while he was leading a landing party during the attack on Santa Cruz de Tenerife a musket ball hit him on the upper right arm, which had to be amputated. It took four months to heal and left him with another permanent disablement.

5) August 1798 - at the Battle of the Nile he was struck on the forehead by a piece of flying metal. Blood loss and the location of the wound led to it being initially thought very serious. However, this was not the case and there was no lasting damage.
