Born (September 25, 1929 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States) to Jewish parents who were descendants of refugees from the former Russian Empire, Barbara Walters is an American broadcast journalist, author and television personality. She was active in her profession beginning in 1951 until 2015 when she retired.

In 1951, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Sarah Lawrence College, a private liberal arts college in Yonkers, New York. She immediately started working for a small advertising agency for about a year. Her next career move was with the NBC (National Broadcasting Company) network affiliate in New York City, doing publicity and writing press releases.

As her career advanced as a producer, her reputation as an interviewer was recognized globally when she interviewed heads of state, diplomats, movie stars and internationally known celebrities.

She has hosted numerous TV programs including “Today’ (1962-1976), the ‘ABC Evening News’ (1976-1978), ‘20/20’ (1979-2004), and ‘The View’ (1997-2014), a daytime talk show that she created.

She has interviewed every sitting U.S. President and First Lady from Richard Nixon, the 37th U.S. President to the 44th U.S. President, Barack Obama.

Walters was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1989, and in 2007 she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2000, she received a a lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
