It is generally acknowledged that the 1967 novel "Rosemary's Baby" by Ira Levin (1929-2007) is a modern horror classic.

It updates the old superstitions about the spawn of Satan to a 1960s New York apartment, where very strange things begin to happen to a young couple named Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse. They have been told that there are decidedly sinister rumours about the apartment, but move in nonetheless, and are befriended by apparently amiable neighbours to whom Guy is especially attracted.

Very strange things happen - not least, Guy, who is a struggling actor, receiving a role because a rival has been struck blind, and Rosemary has (as she thinks) a bizarre and troubling dream about being raped by a wild animal and really does awake with visible wounds.

She discovers she is pregnant, and with a pregnancy craving for raw meat.

When the baby is born, it turns out to be the Antichrist - but both Rosemary and Guy are apparently happy about their "prince"!

The novel was famously filmed with Mia Farrow as Rosemary only the year after the book's publication, but nearly 50 years later it was turned into a miniseries (relocating the action to Paris) with Zoe Saldana in the title role, and this is generally accepted as the exception that proves the rule, and a miniseries that would stand comparison with the movie, also incorporating modern feminist tropes.

It first aired on the 11th May, 2014 - US Mother's Day. Whether coincidental or ironic is debatable!
