Ann Petry had earned a degree in pharmacology and worked as a pharmacist before started working as a writer.

Born into a family of pharmacists in a small Connecticut town, Ann Petry graduated in 1931 with a degree in pharmacy from the University of Connecticut. From 1931 to 1938 she worked in the family’s drugstore before moving to New York City to become a writer.

She began her career as a journalist, writing for the Amsterdam News (1938–41) and the Peoples’ Voice of Harlem (1941–44), and then studied creative writing at Columbia University (1944–46). Petry's most popular novel "The Street" was published in 1946 and won the Houghton Mifflin Literary Fellowship.

William Laughlin, I’ve never seen a question submitted by you. Why is that? I’ve only done 1, maybe 2 myself as I find the review process ridiculous. Three people want it one way, two a little similar, and one out in left field. I honestly don’t understand how many of these questions get thru when I couldn’t get a simple one thru the review process (read: I gave up trying to please 6 people on an easy obvious question.) I think people are weary of your obvious superiority to us all. It’s boring.
