Are or were there women Formula 1 drivers?
Yes, there were five. They are Maria Teresa de Filippis during the years 1958-1959 from team Maserati, Behra-Porsche.
Divina Galica in 1976 racing for team Surtees, Hesketh.
Lella Lombardi during years1974-1976 from team March, Williams, Brabham.
Desiré Wilson in 1980 racing with team Williams.
Giovanna Amati in 1992 from team Brabham.
Of all of them, only Lombardi achieved 0.5 points in Spain in 1975 and only Desiré Wilson won a Formula 1 race of any kind.

De Filippis was prevented from participating in the 1958 French Grand Prix and was allegedly told by the race director "that the only helmet a woman should wear is the one at the hairdresser's." Trail blazers usually have to deal with doubt and discrimination.

Got it right but it is a shame that there such few women competing at this level. For whatever reason it is way too few!

Trixie Pettman-South, Hardley! Women were thought to be not as strong as men and maybe many still aren't. It's hard work driving and safety comes in to it a lot. Same applies to jockeys,and it's a sad fact that many more women jockeys are killed than men!
