As of December 2020 where is the largest cattle farm by area in the world?
Anna Creek Station in South Australia is the largest cattle farm in the world having an area of 6 million acres (24,281 km²). This is pretty amazing considering the country of Israel is 5.1 million acres (21,000 km²), makes you realise how vast this station is. It dwarfs the USA cattle ranches with Wyoming the closest at only 190,000 acres (768 km²)
Australian cattle farms are all large due to the dry climate and limited vegetation, therefore stations require a larger amount of land to have enough vegetation to support even an average amount of cattle. Even so, Anna Creek Station is exceptionally large!
The closest town is located around 160kms east, the famous Opal mining town of Coober Pedy. The area within the station itself is a mix of sandhills, swamps and Gibber tableland (desert pebble landscape). The size of Anna Creek Station may be large but only a handful of staff live at the site including around eight-station hands, a plant operator and a cook. Currently, there are less than 10,000 head of cattle at the station but there have been as many as 17,000 in a good season.
