The Premier League was founded in May, 1992, replacing the old Division One.

Especially during the era of their legendary manager Alex Ferguson (born 1941). Manchester United have been one of the most successful and prestigious teams in the League. They also hold the dubious distinction of having, under Ferguson's leadership, won the League with the lowest ever points tally in the 1996-1997 season, with a total of 75 points.

This was during a time when the team had a plethora of international stars, including David Beckham, who was also to captain the English national team many times, and the mercurial and controversial French player Eric Cantona. It also saw the signing of the Norwegian Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who came to be known as the "super sub", and later managed the club for a while, although that did not end happily, and he was sacked in 2021 after a run of poor form.

Manchester United also hold four of the other spots in the "lowest score" countdown. Arsenal won the 1997-1998 season with a total of 78 points, and Leicester City's surprise win in the 2015-2016 season netted them a paltry 81 points.
