By which of the following Italian opera composers is the opera “Cavalleria Rusticana”?
“Cavalleria Rusticana” (Italian for 'Rustic Chivalry') is a one-act opera by Italian composer Pietro Mascagni (1863 – 1945) to an Italian libretto by Italian opera librettists Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti (1863 – 1934) and Guido Menasci (1867 – 1925), adapted from an 1880 short story of the same name and subsequent play by Italian realist writer Giovanni Verga (1840 – 1922).
Set in 19th century Sicily, the opera combines a tragic tale of forsaken love triangle and jealous revenge with gorgeous and familiar melodies. The opera's symphonic Intermezzo has figured in the soundtrack of several films, most notably in the opening and closing credits of “Raging Bull” (1980) and in the finale of “The Godfather Part III”(1990), which also featured a performance of the opera as a key part of the film's climax.
Primarily known for his operas, Mascagni’s 1890 masterpiece Cavalleria rusticana caused one of the greatest sensations in opera history and single-handedly ushered in the Verismo movement in Italian dramatic music.
Mascagni wrote fifteen operas, an operetta, several orchestral and vocal works, and also songs and piano music. He enjoyed immense success during his lifetime, both as a composer and conductor of his own and other people's music and created a variety of styles in his operas.
