Byam, Christian, and Bligh are characters in the book titled "Mutiny on the Bounty" (1932) by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall. Nordhoff was an American novelist and traveler, born in England. Hall was an American novelist who after World War I spent much of his life on the island of Tahiti. This is where the two men wrote a number of successful adventure books, many adapted for film.

Roger Byam is a fictitious narrative character in "Mutiny on the Bounty". He is used by the authors to tell the story of the ship (The Bounty). Historically, there was no such person as Byam. He is simply a creation of the authors. He dramatizes the situation faced by the Bounty. Byam is just 17 when he meets Captain William Bligh.

Captain Bligh is in charge of the Bounty. He and his crew are sailing to Tahiti to gather breadfruit trees. The fruit will be used as cheap food for slaves of British landowners in the West Indies. Bligh's disciplinary measures will cause the seizure of the Bounty by Lieutenant Fletcher Christian and his followers. Bligh's bad behavior against the crew makes most of them despise him. He becomes an object of scorn.

With Fletcher Christian in the lead, men of the crew will mutiny against Bligh. As a ranking officer and truly honest man, Christian has never done anything dishonorable. He has a strong sense of honesty which makes him burn with shame when he is accused of being dishonest and humiliated in front of the crew. Mutiny becomes a justified option.
