Cockburn Town is the capital city of the Turks and Caicos Islands, situated in the Caribbean Sea. It has been the capital since 1766 and is found on the Grand Turk Island, the largest island in the archipelago.

Founded in 1681 by Bermudian salt collectors, Cockburn Town was the first permanent settlement on any of the islands. The city is allegedly the place where Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León (1460-1521) first landed on the island in 1512.

During the Anglo-French War (1778-1783), the French captured the archipelago but it was later made a British colony after the signing of the Treaty of Paris (1783).

Due to the number of Bermudian arrivals in the 17th century, the architecture and long, narrow streets resemble those in Bermuda. During the 1830s, a different style building called 'Her Majesty's Prison' was built. It remained in operation until 1994, when it was converted into a museum.
