Dating back to the Jurassic Era, Crabs are decapod crustaceans of the infraorder "Brachyura". Crustaceans are cold-blooded invertebrates covered by an exoskeleton, which they must periodically shed in order to grow larger. They live in all the world's oceans, in freshwater, and on land. Most varieties have 2 pairs of antennae and 4 walking legs on either side of their body, and 2 pinching claws - decapod, meaning 10 legs.

The Horsehair Crab (Erimacrus isenbeckii) is found at the bottom of the Okhotsk and the western Bering Sea. Found abundantly in Hokkaido, it is colloquially known as the Hokkaido Crab. This compact brown-orange crab have a bumpy shell with orange or lightly-colored dots on it. It is also called the ‘hairy crab’ due to the spiky hairs on its legs.

The Coconut Crab (Birgus latro) is the largest crustacean that spends all its adult life on land and inhabits islands in the Indian and Pacific oceans. Its behavior has also earned it various names; the name ‘coconut crab’ is because of its ability to climb up palms, pick coconuts, and then open them on the ground. It is also called the ‘robber crab’ or ‘palm thief’ as it will 'steal' anything edible it can find.

The Peekytoe Crab is otherwise known as the Atlantic Rock Crab (Cancer irroratus). It inhabits the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean. This crab is brown of color on its hard shell with purplish spots on it - it is nicknamed "peekytoes" due to the pointed shape of its legs.
