D-Day occurred on which of the following dates?

D-Day is a military term that states for the day on which a combat attack or operation is to be started. The initiation of the Battle of Normandy (it took place on the 6th of June, 1944) is usually referred to as just D-Day, as it is the best known event of a kind in military history.

It began with overnight parachute and glider landings, massive air attacks and naval bombardments. By the end of August the northern France was liberated from Germany. Later the invaders were reorganized and set off for Germany. They joined the efforts with the Soviet forces, which were coming from the east, and together brought an end to Hitler's Reich.

Most historians estimate that the operation cost the Alliance about 2,000 casualties, but some researchers suggest that twice as many people were left dead.

krkyates, The landing of combat forces on Juno, Sword, Gold, Omaha and Utah and the land battle of Normandy is indeed called "Overlord" The part of the operation where those same combat forces crossed the English Channel was called "Operation Neptune" This took place on 06 June 1944 and as mafiacook has mentioned it was supposed to begin on 05 June 1944 but was cancelled by the Supreme Commander 5 Star General of the Army (U.S.) Dwight D. Eisenhower because of extreme bad weather. Note during the night he prepared two speeches, one for a successful landing and another for a failed landing and very high casualties for which he took full responsibility... obviously only one speech was used. Regarding the military term D-Day which means simply the start date for specific field operations. It does not stand for anything merely an alternative placeholder used to designate a particular day on the calendar which is of course a close held secret and is used for planning and briefing. The officer in charge weighs all options and determines the "Go Time". D-Day is day one of combat operations and continues to D +1, +2,+3, etc. Operation Overlord commenced 06 June 1944 until 30 August 1944, 2 months, 3 weeks and 3 days.

If ever you get the chance to see David Haig's play "Pressure" about Group Captain James Stagg, the meteorologist advising Eisenhower, grab a ticket with both hands. One of the best and most gripping plays I've ever seen - even though you know from the start how it turned out.

When i was a teenager, the movie D-DAY THE SIXTH OF JUNE was in the theaters. I've never forgotten that title for some reason, and I've never seen the movie. :-)
