The 2014 film "The Equalizer", an American vigilante action movie, was directed by Antoine Fuqua. It was produced by a group financial investors, including Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Denzel Washington. The film is the first installment of "The Equalizer" trilogy, loosely based on the 1980s TV series of the same title. Written by Richard Wenk, it stars Washington in the lead role, along with Marton Csokas, Chloë Grace Moretz, David Harbour, Bill Pullman and Melissa Leo. This film focuses on a former US Marine turned DIA intelligence officer who reluctantly returns to action to protect a teenage prostitute from members of the Russian mafia.

Washington is playing Robert McCall a very meticulous man, from the way he neatly shelves concrete mix at the home improvement warehouse store he works in — to the ordered, spare apartment of shelved books and freshly washed dishes where he lives. In his personal appearance, he has a bald head (skull shaved) to hide his advancing years. He is a man still able to carry himself with a feline stride that he has mastered over time.

In 2013, the film's principal photography took place in the state of Massachusetts. The world premiere for "The Equalizer" was held in 2014 at Toronto International Film Festival; it was released in theaters worldwide on September 26, 2014. The film received generally mixed reviews from critics. It however grossed over $192 million worldwide. A sequel titled "The Equalizer 2" was released in July 2018.
