King George III was the monarch exercising the highest authority and power in Great Britain during the American Revolutionary War. King George III (1738-1820), or George William Frederick, was king of Great Britain and Ireland from 1760-1820.

King George III ascended to the throne just as the French and Indian War was coming to a close, a fateful moment in world history. The Peace of Paris that came in 1763 led to a number of changes in English policy, which sparked multiple conflicts with the American colonists. The problems which existed in Great Britain contributed to an increasingly hostile dynamic in America. This dynamic would eventually spark the American Revolution.

Because of inconsistency in governmental policy and in response to the Boston Tea Party of 1773, King George III famously told Lord North, Prime Minister of Great Britain, that the colonists must either submit or triumph. In the end, the American colonists finally did triumph. They won the American Revolutionary War.
