Baron Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim (4 June 1867 – 27 January 1951) was a Finnish military leader and statesman.
He served as the military leader of the Whites in the Finnish Civil War of 1918, as Regent of Finland (1918–1919), as commander-in-chief of Finland's defence forces during the period of World War II (1939–1945), as Marshal of Finland (from 1942), and as the sixth president of Finland (1944–1946).
When Soviet forces attacked Finland in December 1939, he served as commander in chief, and his brilliant leadership won considerable successes against vast numerical superiority, but the end result was defeat, resulting in a relatively harsh peace settlement in 1940.

When Mannerheim met Hitler, the meeting took place in Hitler's train. It was secretly recorded by Finnish secret service, but recording was discovered by the Germans and was stopped suddenly. However enough remained and a few years ago it was released and heard for the first time. It is one of the very, very few occasions when you can hear Hitler's 'normal' everyday voice. Chilling.
