For which film did Julie Christie win an Academy Award for Best Actress?
Julie Christie won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in the 1965 film "Darling". This film is a British drama and romance that was directed by John Schlesinger and written by Frederic Raphael. Besides starring Christie, other major stars are Dirk Bogarde and Laurence Harvey.
In the film, beautiful but easily bored Diana Scott (Christie) becomes a popular model and actress in London in the 1960s. Her persona is that of an amoral woman who changes professions as often as she changes lovers. She can't seem to find any happiness. She has her career while toying with the affections of two older men, married TV newsman Robert Gold (Dirk Bogarde) and public relations mastermind Miles Brand (Laurence Harvey). Although Diana is the toast of swinging London, the dark side of fame and fortune will take their toll on her. She finds that it proves very hard to escape the mod scene. She expects at first that she should be able to escape her existing life style all on her own.
"Darling" was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Although some critics found her performance stilted, Christie still won the Oscar for her acting and the film also won Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best Costume Design. "Far from the Madding Crowd" (1967), based on Thomas Hardy’s epic novel of the same name, was Schlesinger’s big-budget payoff for his success with "Darling".
