Solomon Joel Cohen, more commonly known as Sidney 'Sid' James (1913-1976), was a Jewish South African comic actor known for his roles in the 'Carry On' series of films.

James was as a regular 'Carry On' performer, appearing in nineteen films between 1960 and 1974. He was described by critics as "the grand old man of dirty laughter." He portrayed wise-cracking, sly, lecherous Cockney characters, most of whom had the name Sid or Sidney. James became recognised for his trademark "dirty laugh" and his world-weary catchphrase, "Cor, blimey!"

In 1960, James made his 'Carry On' debut in 'Carry On Constable' as Sgt. Frank Wilkins. His final 'Carry On' film, which was also his last film role, was 'Carry On Dick' in 1974.

The 'Carry On' franchise consists of 31 British comedy films produced between 1958 and 1992. The series replicated the traditional humour of British comic music hall acts and pictures on bawdy seaside postcards.

On 26th April 1976, James starred in a tour of the play 'The Mating Season', by the Irish playwright Sam Cree. During the performance, James suffered a heart attack on stage, which the actors and audience initially mistook for a practical joke. After realising the severity of the situation, an ambulance was called, but James was pronounced dead on arrival at the Sunderland Royal Hospital. He was only 62 years old.
