"Yellow Sky"(1948), a western about an elderly prospector & his feisty granddaughter (Anne Baxter), set in a desolate western town, has them fending off a gang of bad guys including, surprise, Gregory Peck &, no surprise, Richard Widmark. It has evocative monochrome photography by Joseph MacDonald, a taut storyline. Although not well remembered, it a classic.The Writers Guild of America gave producer/co-writer Lamar Trotti & co-writer W. R. Burnett the award for “Best Written American Western” of 1949.

I loved Friendly Persuasion, the only choice I've heard of.

I remember Friendly Persuasion and Vera Cruz were movie titles, not the others. However, I didn't know which films were "his", so I had to guess. Took a chance and guessed that it was Yellow Sky that he didn't star in.

First movie my mother took me to see just before my 6th birthday was High Noon in 1952. Do not know why but i was a fan of Gary Cooper then and still am at the old age of almost 76. I remember when he passed in 1961 too.
