Hobart is the capital city of which Australian state?
Located on the River Derwent, Hobart was originally a British penal colony founded in 1804 when the initial settlement, at nearby Risdon, was abandoned. The second oldest city in Australia, after Sydney, Hobart grew to become the capital city of the island state.
Whaling was a major source of income throughout the early decades of European settlement bringing both people and trade to the then town. In the 1830's the revenue from whale exports was greater than any other produce exported from the island.
In 2020 Hobart was home to a estimated 224,000 people, making up approximately half of Tasmania's population but less than one percent of the overall Australian population.
