The crossbar of a field hockey goal should be 7ft (2.14m) above the ground. Two upright posts support the crossbar and are placed 12ft (3.66m) apart. This gives the goal entrance a total area of 25.7sqft (7.83sqm). The goals are positioned at both ends of a 100yd (91.4m) pitch, in the centre of the 60yd (55m) wide backline.

Outdoor field hockey pitches are usually laid with artificial turf. Before a game, the pitch is dampened because the water helps reduce the friction on the surface, thus helping the ball travel more smoothly. It also prevents the ball bouncing and reduces the chance of friction burns when a player falls over.

Field hockey has been played at the Summer Olympic Games. Whilst artificial grass is traditionally green, the London 2012 Olympics started a new trend of blue pitches. Blue turf helps television viewers see the yellow hockey ball during gameplay.

Since 2012, blue turf has become the standard for professional field hockey tournaments.
