There are 5 campus universities in Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland. A campus university is one on sites or a site that include(s) libraries, lecture halls, residence halls, student and sport centres, dining halls and park-like settings.

There are two other bodies of higher learning in the city but neither has a campus. Those are The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (an academic society, examination and accreditation body) and The Open University in Scotland (the Scottish base for the Open University, the distance learning university in the U.K.)

The five campus universities are:The University of Edinburgh (established in 1582) with 26,000 undergraduate and 15,000 postgraduate students (the subject of the picture is New College, School of Divinity, University of Edinburgh); Edinburgh Napier University (established in 1992) with 15,600 undergraduate and 4,200 postgraduate students; Heriot-Watt University (established in 1966) with 6,100 undergraduate and 2,200 postgraduate students; Queen Margaret University (established in 1999) with 5,900 undergraduate and 2,130 postgraduate students and SRUC (Scotland’s Rural College - established in 2012) with 1520 undergraduate and 100 postgraduate students.

The dates shown for the 'younger four' institutions are when each received university status with the authority to award their own degrees to doctorate levels. Their respective origins in the city, however, go much further back, into the mid 19th century.
