Bees have five eyes.

A pair of compound eyes cover much of the surface of the head. Between and above these are three small simple eyes (ocelli) that provide information on the light intensity.

These eyes enable bees to see UV (ultraviolet) markers in the flowers that guide the bee onto the 'landing platform' of the flower and to the nectar reward. Each tiny lens of the compound eyes perceives the surroundings from a very slightly different angle.

Other characteristics of bees include: Bees differ from a closely related group such as wasps by having branched or plume-like setae (hairs), Combs on the forelimbs for cleaning their antennae, small anatomical differences in limb structure, and the venation of the hind wings; and in females, by having the seventh dorsal abdominal plate divided into two half plates.
