How many minutes must an ice hockey player stay seated for a minor penalty?
Teams may be required to play with fewer than five players for a period of time if they commit a penalty or multiple penalties. Players guilty of penalties must sit in the penalty box. The team that loses a player(s) to the box is called shorthanded while the team with more players on the ice is on a power play. If a player is assessed a minor penalty, he must serve two minutes in the penalty box. His team must play with one less man on the ice during those two minutes.

The penalty is for up to 2 minutes. If the team on the power play scores before the 2 minutes is up, the penalty is deemed over.

I love ice hockey but there is none in my country. Apart from occasional tv viewing I have only ever attended one game. I believe the playing area in North America, to accomodate more spectators, is smaller than in Europe. Does this lead to more fights in the North American game?

As many other people have already stated there are two correct answers depending on the type of foul it can be either 2 minutes or 5 minutes. Once again how did this get through to be published as is?

I live in Montreal Canada. And Hockey is the Pastime Off Every day in the Winter (2 minutes for minor Penalty and 5 minutes for a Major , i miss the NHL Auction And I hope is going to Start Soon

Man, do I miss the NHL! And the picture of the two guys fighting would not result in a 2 minute sit down, but, a 5 minute major.
