At 4:35am on the 4th September, 2010 an earthquake, with a magnitutude of 7.1, struck the South Island of New Zealand near the town of Darfield, 40km west of the city of Christchurch. It had a maximum perceived intensity of X (Extreme) on the Mercalli intensity scale and occurred in a previously unknown fault line.

In spite of the intensity of the quake there were no deaths and only two people were seriously injured. Many buildings were damaged but houses were adequately reinforced so didn't collapse. Also the quake struck at an hour when the majority of the population were inside sleeping, not out on the streets where they could possibly have been crushed by falling masonry.
