It takes just one sperm to fertilize an egg and achieve a pregnancy. The odds are always stacked against any single sperm cell making a grueling journey to the egg to fertilize it. Nonetheless, to offset the normal situation, a large number of sperm cells are produced when needed.

If I remember correctly, a rare accidental 2nd sperm can cause chromosomal (sp?) abnormalities, deformities, and other handicaps.

While it is true that only one sperm can fertilize an egg, it takes the combined efforts and enzymes of many sperm to break down the corona radiata and zona pelucida in order for that one sperm to be able to penetrate into the ovum.
