How many time zones are there in the world?

Originally, the Earth is divided into several time zones starting from the Greenwich Meridian. The time of every zone is 1 hour earlier than the time of the zone right to the east on the map.

Though some skeptics say that the number of time zones is a doubtful question that can't be answered correctly, the surface of our planet is usually divided into the standard amount of 24 zones.

Although there are 24 time zones based upon the 24 hour rotation time of the earth, there are several differences of 15, 30, or 45 minutes established around the world at different times to reflect more localised needs.

This is incorrect. A number of countries, including Australia, have 1/2 hour timezones which adds to the number.

There are more than 24 time zones in the world. Some are separated by minutes or halves of hours!

The answer isn't right. Even though there are some that are very close together it still should be counted. 24 is incorrect 35 is a much better answer.
