The four-wheel layout has become the standard for passenger cars due to its ideal combination of stability, handling, and reliability. Since the 19th century, when the first four-wheeled cars appeared, this design has remained dominant in the automotive industry. While there have been rare vehicles with three or even six wheels, mass-produced cars almost always have four.

Some experimental or racing cars have tried different wheel configurations. For example, the famous Tyrrell P34 Formula 1 car had six wheels, but such designs never became mainstream. For everyday road use, four wheels provide the best balance between safety, ease of maintenance, and driving comfort. This is why, when you see a typical car on the road, you can almost always count on it having four wheels.
