Red wine is a type of wine made from dark-colored grape varieties. The actual color of the wine can range from intense violet, typical of young wines, through to brick red for mature wines and brown for older red wines.

The alcohol content of red wine usually falls between 12% and 15%, with an average of 13.5% ABV (alcohol by volume). Red wines tend to have higher alcohol content than their white counterparts. Red wines are made of grapes that are usually harvested late in the season. These grapes have more sugar than the grapes used in white wines, so fermentation leads to a higher concentration of alcohol.

The fermentation process also leads to a higher level of tannins in red wine which gives it a much stronger coloration.
