The Winter Olympic Games is a major international multi-sport event usually held once every four years for sports practiced on snow and ice. The first Winter Olympic Games, the 1924 Winter Olympics, were held in Chamonix, France. A ski resort town in the French Alps.

The "International Winter Sports Week", as it was known, was a great success, and in 1928 the International Olympic Committee officially designated the Winter Games, staged in St. Moritz, Switzerland, as the second Winter Olympics.

Sixteen countries sent more than 250 participants for the events. Athletes from Finland and Norway won 28 medals, more than the rest of the participating countries combined. Sonja Henie of Norway, at just 11 years old, competed in the ladies' figure skating competition and, although finishing last, became popular with fans. Sonja would win a gold medal just four years later at St. Moritz.
