Hulk Hogan's opponent in the 1988 match for the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) Championship was André the Giant. This match was a rematch of the WrestleMania III main event between WWF champion Hulk Hogan and André the Giant. The match took place in the Market Square Arena, Indianapolis, IN on live TV as the "The Main Event". It was seen by 33 million people; it was the most-watched TV wrestling match in North American at the time.

After the match, it was revealed that the referee who called the match was not the assigned referee (Dave Hebner). It was his twin brother, Earl Hebner. Earl had been hired to be part of a slick sub-story to screw with the key match. The referee change was very important since one of Hogan's shoulders was off the mat during the pinfall. This fact was ignored by the referee. It allowed André to win!

The U.S. TV show "The Main Event" was a professional wrestling television program. It was produced by the WWF as a spin-off of "Saturday Night's Main Event". "The Main Event" aired on NBC on Friday nights during prime time TV hours. There were five event shows between 1988 and 1991. Only the first three events were shown live on NBC. The final two were taped and then shown on NBC at a later date.
