From 1790 until 2020 one of the original 13 states of the USA was officially named the "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" (written out as 42 characters and 6 spaces).

In November 2020 there was a ballot measure that proposed to change the official name of the state from "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" to "State of Rhode Island": the proposal passed with 53% of the vote. So, now it is just "State of Rhode Island", the official name can be written as 18 characters and 3 spaces.

Perhaps a little bit easier for official headed notepaper.
