In biology, the 'Imago' is the last stage an insect attains during its 'metamorphosis'. It is also called the imaginal stage at which the insect attains maturity. The complete 'metamorphosis' is called 'holometaboly', incomplete is 'hemimetaboly' and no 'metamorphosis' is 'ametaboly'. In insects, the growth and 'metamorphosis' are controlled by hormones synthesized in the body.

'Hemimatabolism' includes three distinct stages: the egg, nymph, and the adult or 'imago'. 'Holometabolism' has four life stages: the egg, larva, pupa and the 'imago' or adult. While 'ametabolous' insects show very little difference between larval adult or 'imago' form.

Examples: 'Holometabolous' insects are beetle, flies, ants, bees, etc. Hemimetabolous' insects are grasshoppers, crickets, cockroches, termites, etc. 'Ametabolous' insects are silverfish, the firebat and the jumping bristletails filefish.
