Stentor was a herald of the Greek forces during the Trojan War whose voice was as loud as that of fifty men. It is said that he came by his death as the result of challenging Hermes, the crier of the gods, to a contest. Possibly, like Hermes himself, Stentor is a personification of the wind. Stentor's powerful voice made him a natural choice for delivering announcements and proclamations to the assembled Greek army during the Trojan War.

The name is used in modern times for anyone possessing a particularly loud voice (stentorian).
