In its heyday, what percent of world diamond output did De Beers Consolidated Mines control?

It's unbelievable but in 1888 the prosperous monopoly was built by just one man (Cecil Rhodes)! By his mid-thirties he was already a billionaire. Having been a rich person deeply interested in mining, he was soon able to control De Beers mines and thus, held a dominion over ninety per cent of world's diamond output.

Cecil John Rhodes is a man who no longer is held in high regard in South Africa as his treatment of the native population was appalling and was in some respects a precursor of the horrors of Apartheid. His statue in the grounds of the University of Cape Town was removed a couple of years back after strong protests about it still being there for that very reason.
