In the 1959 film "Ben-Hur", the person who is almost killed by a roof tile which accidentally falls from Ben-Hur's house is Valerius Gratus. He was a man who became the Roman Prefect of Iudaea province under Tiberius from 15 to 26 CE. In Judea, he succeeded Annius Rufus and was replaced by Pontius Pilate. Historians have written that the rule of Gratus is chiefly remarkable for the frequent changes he made in the appointment of men to the high-priesthood.

Valerius Gratus is well remembered and most famous for being the governor of Judea from 11-14 CE. After he was recalled to Rome, he was then replaced by Pontius Pilate as noted in the film and book both titled "Ben-Hur". Not in the film but in the novel, Gratus is portrayed as a corrupt governor who acts against the Jews by removing the rightful head priest of the Temple, Hannas, and replacing him with a Roman puppet, Ishmael.
