In the movie ‘Saving Private Ryan’, American actor Tom Hanks (born 1956) plays the role of Captain John H. Miller, who leads his command, Company C, 2nd Ranger Battalion on to Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, as part of the Normandy invasion, called D-Day. Their purpose was to find and safely bring back Private First Class James Francis Ryan of the 101st Airborne Division, who is missing and presumed to be the last survivor of four brothers who are all in the military.

General George C. Marshall orders Ryan, played by the American actor Matt Damon, (born 1970) to be found and sent home so that his family will not lose all its sons.

Omaha Beach was the code name for one of the five sectors of the Allied invasion of German-occupied France. It refers to an 8-kilometer (5 mile) section of the coast of Normandy, France, facing the English Channel, from east of Sainte-Honorine-des-Pertes to west of Vierville-sur-Mer on the right bank of the Douve River estuary.

The primary objective at the landing at Omaha Beach was to secure a beachhead linking with the British landings at Gold Beach to the east.

The film was released in July 1998 and had a running time of 169 minutes with a budget of $70 million, earning box office receipts of $482.3 million. The actual filming of the landing scene was shot in Ballinesker Beach, just east of Curracloe, County Wexford, Ireland. Members of the Irish Army reserve were used as infantry for the D-Day landing.
