In the 1983 British mini-series "Reilly, Ace of Spies" the actor who played Sidney Reilly is Sam Neill (September 1947). Born in Omagh, Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland, his given name is Nigel John Dermot Neill. Besides acting, he is a writer, producer, and director.

In "Reilly, Ace of Spies" Sam Neill dramatized the life of Sidney Reilly. Neill was able to show how Reilly became one of the greatest spies ever to work for the British government. Neill acted out Reilly's 20th-century exploits, the infiltration of the German General Staff in 1917 and a near overthrow of the Bolsheviks in 1918. Additionally, a good performance was provided concerning Reilly's legendary reputation with women and his genius for using them in espionage.

The mini-series was written by Troy Kennedy Martin and based on the 1967 book "Ace of Spies" by Robin Bruce Lockhart, whose father R. H. Bruce Lockhart was one of Reilly's fellow spies. Sam Neill was a good choice to star as the eponymous character. The theme music for the series is the romance movement from Dmitri Shostakovich’s "The Gadfly Suite", though Shostakovich is not actually credited (Harry Rabinowitz is credited with the music).
